The NZ General Social Surveys 2014 and 2018 asked the question:
“People who have contact with family and friends can still feel lonely sometimes, while those who have little contact may not feel lonely at all. In the last four weeks, how much of the time have you felt lonely?”
Comparing the answers to the question in 2014 and 2018 (see table), there has been an increase in the proportion of Kiwis who are lonely some of the time. The good news is that there has been a slight reduction in the proportion of Kiwis with prolonged loneliness (i.e. felt lonely most/all of the time) – a segment we address with our mentoring services.
